Why, Yes, I *Do* Judge Books By Their Covers

Every bookworm avid reader understands the seductive power of books. Books possess an enchanting nature. Being around them fills us with an unsatisfied desire to consume more. There’s actually a self-help book for biblioholism. Entertaining though it may be, the first two chapters I’ve read thus far did little to help me overcome my addiction. It actually added fuel! Heh. Tom Raabe’s book starts with a little anecdote about how he has ‘total control’ over his book addiction. He has good reason to possess multiple copies of the same title. They’re different editions, after all. Then the unthinkable happens: he … Continue reading

Survival of the Stressed

Bullies. Peer Pressure. Parents. Academics. Nagging bosses… Stress exists in many forms. Equally various are the ways in which to deal with tough situations. I used to think my imagination was merely a mechanism that further separated me from my classmates. With several psychology lectures behind me, the more logical answer is that my imagination became my shield. Maybe I do ‘waste’ too much time with my head in the clouds, refusing to grow sessile in the place we deem reality. But my reasons aren’t as important as the efficiency it presents. It is because of my imagination that I … Continue reading

Share the Wonders: ‘FARSCAPE’ Dominates the Future

For the last month, the wonders of FARSCAPE have captured my attention. Non-stop. As in, since my first exposure, I’ve watched 88 episodes (plus the 3-hour miniseries) thrice! I’ve moved on to the DVD featurettes and audio commentaries, which is where the show has truly begun to work its magic on me. Now it’s no secret that I’m prone to addictive tendencies when it comes to television, but FARSCAPE has proven itself separate from the rest. Highly unique, and not just because of the qualities that make it the most epic sci-fi show (or any show, really) I’ve had the … Continue reading

It’s All About Mystery Boxes

J.J. Abrams (creator of ALIAS and LOST, two of my favourite TV shows from the 2000′s) will long be a positive inspiration to my writing career. Cuz he’s awesome. About a year ago, I came across this TED video, and have since returned to it whenever I need to refresh my muse: Abrams’ talk epitomises the impact his creations have on me. Many of the world’s greatest films are deeper than the larger aspects we assume them to be about. The secret lies within the subtleties that—more often than not—go unnoticed. The best example given in this video is from … Continue reading

Cage That Inner Editor

Cage it, slap on a dozen locks, and get ready to tap away at your keyboard (or write your arm off, if you prefer that method). Next week is National Novel Writing Month—a global event encouraging writers (novice or expert, published or not) to complete a novel draft of no less than 50,000 words within the 30 days of November. It took me until the end of November 2006, to discover this event, but I was determined to participate the following year. I read up on the event and planned how to tackle my project. As 2007 rolled around, my idea … Continue reading
